The Federal Government has allocated sixty thousand pounds sterling for the relief of sufferers by the Japan earthquake. Ten. thousand has already been cabled to the British Ambassador Tokyo. It has also decided to despatch a relief ship with foodstuffs. There is no news of several Australians at present in Japan, including the parents of Mr. Hawkes, the Davis Cup tennis player.

Substantial "Canadian Help.

Ottawa, Sept. 9. While awaiting a reply from Japan' to an enquiry as to how Canada can most effectively assist in relief, the Government has arranged for the Empress of Russia, sailing from Vancouver on Saturday, to carry supplies of flour, lumber, prepared milk and other accessaries. The Canadian Red Cross and various civic organisa tions are taking immediate steps to assist.

A Foreign Oflice communique says the British, American, French and Italian Embassies were burned down. According to a priest; who visited Akakura hotspring, Niigata Prefecture, Princess Nagako. is safe there.
