ITALIANS OCCUPY CORFU.
Athens, Sept. 1. The Italians have occupied Corfu, Telegraphic communication between Corfu and Athens was cut at seven o'clock last evening. It is asserted that the Italians bom- barded the forts, denuded of guns in accordance with the Florenco convention, although the Italians were informed that the forts were inhabited by refugee orphans. The number of the latter killed is variously reported to be from seven to fifteen The Governor of Corfu and ten officers are detained on an Italian warship. The garrison of the leland, numbering 150, retired to the interior. M. Gonatas-de- clared last evening that no reply would be sent to the second Italian äote, Greece would, await the decisions of the League of Nations. At a public sitting of the Council of the League this morning,.. the Secretary General announced receipt of documents in the Italo Greek dispute, which are most urgent for the Council to consider. Greece has applied for the League's intervention under Articles twelve and fifteen of the covenant. Signor Salandra, the Italian mem-. ber of the Council, declared that nothing in Italy's attitude could be regarded as a threat of war under Article twelve. The Council met this afternoon to consider the documents.
M. Politis has handed the Secretariat of the League the Greek... Note asking for intervention in the dispute with Italy.
The Council of the League of Nations, Viscount Lahii presiding. privately discussed Greece's appeal, The Greek representative Politis was present as a member of the Council. The Council unanimously passed a resolution agreeing to a short adjojrnment for examination of the question, fervently hoping that Italy and Greece meanwhile, will not commit any act which will aggravate the situation.
