EARLIER TELEGRAMS
AMERICA'S RUBBER DEMANDS.
London, Aug. 27.
An interesting event in the commodity markets last week was the reentry, after an interval of some months, of America as a consi- derable buyer of rubber chiefly for delivery during January, February and March, 1924, thereby causing a rise in the January-March price to Is. 44d. per pound and the spot quotation to ls. 35/8d."
Figures received by the Rubber Growers' Association show that America's consumption of rubber in the second quarter of 1923 was over eighty thousand tons apart from fifteen thousand tons reclaimed. Stocks in America on 30th June amounted to over one hundred thous and tons besides twenty-eight thousand afloat. The consumption figure, the Times points out, makes America's total imports for the first six months of 1923, namely one hundred and ninety thousand. tans, look less excessive than at one time seemed to be the case. »
IRISH FREE STATE.
London, Aug. 27.
Polling is most active in Ireland to-day, which is a public holi- day. The electors number eighteen hundred thousand an increase of half a million, and the candidates 371 for 153 seats. Forecasts are difficult owing to proportional representation, but the Government's
continuance in office seems to be assured.
Premier Cosgrave, who last week covered one thousand miles and addressed forty meetings in support of Government candidates, has already arranged to leave on Wednesday, with several colleagues, for Geneva to negotiate the Free States admission to the Assembly of the league of Nations. The complete results of the election are not
likely to be had before the end of the week.

The death of the Premier has created a very keen political situs- ion, in which the two political parties engaged to bid for power Point to the probability of a aca- party or reconstruction of the pre- vent Cabinet to carry on until the General Election next May,
The Kenseikai, this afternoon, staged a monster demonstration, which was attended by 12,000 people, to oppose the continuation of the Seiyukai cr non-party Cabinet.
The political situation is not ex. pected to clear until after the funeral of the lata Premier.- Reuter.
Constantinople, Aug. 27. Evacuation of the British troops is actively proceeding.
