New York, July 9. Watercraft and aeroplanes are scouting on the surface of Lake Erie in the hope of rescuing the two occupants of the naval ballaba. It is believed the basket of the balloon is still afloat, as it is practically unsinkable if properly cut from the bag.

Maughan started at 4.56 this morning on the first section of an attempt on a dawn to dusk flight across America, planned by the United States air service, using Curtis pursuit aeroplane, similar to the machine in which Lt. Maughani and Lieutenant Maitland recently established their world speed records, capable of an average speed of 16) miles an hour.

A conference of the transport workers' union in London has passed a resolution declaring the dockers. agreement must be hon- oured, and urging the strikers to resume. The report of the Coal Commission established by Congress last October, recommends that in the event of a cessation in the operation of the industry, the President be empowered to declare state of emergency take charge of the mines and fix the miners' wages and compensation to the awners, subject to review by the Courts, and distribute output.

The response to our appeal for the nemes of those interested in. the organising of local motor car and cycle contests has been 50 satisfactory that we have decided Fto call a meeting for the purpose of discussing the project and arranging detaila.
The meeting will take place at the offices of the Hongkong Tele- graph on Tuesday next, July 17th, at 5:30 pm. Prospective competitors as well as those will ing to lend a hand in organising work are cordially invited to be present.
So far, clase on forty names have been seat in by those interested, including a number of car owners. The majority, however, are motorcyclista. We again appeal to car owners to give the movement their support, as the contests will be so arranged as to give scope for all types of
