When Marius gained a victory over the horde of barbarians that were threatening Italy, Les Baux was a natural fortress. Its time of real prosperity was in the Middle Ages, when there lived there the Princes of Orange, from whom our own King can trace his lineage. This noble house intermarried with the Royal houses of England Poland, France, Savoy, and other Prin cipalities, and had titles, derived from Milan, Naples, and Pied mont. At one time the Prince of of Les Baux was also an Emper. or of Constantinople.

To-day this city hardly con- taina 100 inhabitants, and the ruins of its former palaces can be seen amid the few cottages that survive. The 's made by coaches that carried kings in the Middle Ages still remain in the rock pavement, of the narrow street.

SUGGESTED INFERNO" SCENES ?

The district is ro" wild, and the: rocks have such fantastic shapes, that it ia little wonder that, one of the local, traditions is that Dante was inspired to describe the Inferno from his memories of the scenery of this district. "He cartainly lived for a time in Arles, and a valley not far away from Les Baux is still called the Val d'Enter.

On the top of the rock in a city which appears to the visitor to be almost as deserted as Pompeii, may be found the remains of vari oua churches and chapels. Some-

times there can be traced out on

the grass the eita of the old arena in which bull fights were held. In earlier days a hoepital for lepers was situated there, and the rocks are recessed so as to hold the beds of the patients.

An interesting, connection be tween modern daya and this remote and deseried town in the Hinterland of the Riviera is the story of a struggle between an ancestor of the present Lord Derby and one of the lords of Les Baux. Froissart describes that at the siege of La Reoleîn Gascony, conducted by the Earl of Derby, Sir Agra Les Baux cOR manded the troops. After nine weeks' siege the Frenchman' ffered to eurrender the fortress if he and his troops could be allowed safe passage. Σοτά Derby's answer was, "We know your distress, and we will receive only an unconditional surrender." The old chronicler relates that. sir Agos decided to trust to the honour of the English, and that Lord Derby then granted him and bie men honour and safety.-- Cserver....
