THE UNREST IN CHINA.

The

London, June 12. In the House of Commons, replying to Mr. Trevelyan Thomson, who asked what steps the Government is taking to protect the lives and interests of British subjects and traders in China in view of the most serious situation outside the area of the Treats Ports, Mr. "R. McNeill said the strps taken since the discontinuance of operations against the brigands were proceeding fairly satisfactorily. British .mister in Peking had been authorised to press for a rail- way police force, with greater foreige control over milway revenues to ensure that the railway police would be properly paid, and he had teen instructed to consult with his colleagues with a view to joint netice by all the Powers concerned. The British Government had no Teasub te atribute bad faith to the Government in Peking.

THE GERMAN MEMORANDUM.

Londex, June 12. The Allies are actively conferring diplomatically on the sub- ject of the German memorandum. Viscount Curzon has conversed with the Fracco-Italias-Belgian ambassadors. The prospects of an agreement are represented in some quarters as not bright owing to French intransigence. It is stated elsewhere that ministers are not unhopeful of attaining an ultimate agreement, Conversations will be continued with the object of arranging, if possible, a joint. realy. It is doubtful whether the British Government will agree to urge Re lin to end passive resistance in the Ruhr unless it is able to hold out reasonable inducements. Something in the nature of an armistice in the Ruhr is being discussed in the Allied capitala.
