CHINA SEA PIRACIES.

London, May 23. According to the Daily Telegraph the recent incidents on tə steamer Taishun have aroused considerable questioning lp shipping- and insurance circles as to whether additional insurance rates might be required in view of the spasmodic piracy on the China Sea. The Telegraph learns that additional premiums are at present unlikely, but further incidents will result in immediate action of those lines.

HONGKONG TRADE.

Melbourne, May 33.

The Melbourne Age reports that an influential group of Victorian producers and exporters has decided to despatch a special representa tive to Hongkong, with the object of exploring avenues of trade in China and Japan, particularly in foodstuffs.

THE NEW BRITISH PREMIER.

London, May 23.

The newspapers are more greatly concerned with the future of the party and orientation than the actual personality of the Premier. The press is divided into two camps, the first advocating the recon-

extensiva ciliation of the Conservative Party, which would involve Ministerial changes in order to admit the Ex-Coalitionists, and the second recommending the least possible changes, thus to avoid up- setting the continuity of important work, to which the various ministries are beginning to settle down.

The extent of the changes largely depends on Viscount Curzon, whose retention in the Foreign Ministry has hitherto not been con firmed Much sympathy is extended by all sides to Vistant Curzon who would be the natural successor to Mr. Bonar Law, except for popular preference for a commoner as Premier. Therefore, Mr. Baldwin's appointment is greeted by the iberals as a definite end to Peer Premiers.

The Daily Telegraph and Times urge the inclusion of Coalitionists. The Daily Express says no better choice could have been made. The Daily Mail states that Mr. Baldwin has already wer. golden opinions and proved his strength.

The Daily News states that Mr. Baldwin's rise is due to his sound abilities and attractive temperament, but also to a miraculous series of chances.

The Westminster Gazette says Mr. Baldwin's premiership is a revelation of the deficiencies of his party rather than evidence of any impression that he has yet made on the popular mind.

The Daily Chronicle hails the appointment as a triumph for the Die-hard Extremists.

The Daily Herald says that Mr. Baldwin gained his reputation for soundness, judgment, kindliness, honesty and a real desire to secure better conditions at home and peaceful relations abroad.

The Morning Post says he is the best man for the job, a states- man whom the Nation has learned to trust

Paris, May 22, Mr. Baldwin's appointment is favourably received. His expert qualities, especially, are highly spoken of. It is generally presumed that he will continue Mr. Bonar Law's policy.

New York, May 23. The newspapers consider Mr. Baldwin's appointment as a happy event. They dwell on his fine record and substantial accomplish- ments, botably the Debt Funding Agreement and the Budget. They give the opinion that he is eminently Stted to deal with Enance and economics, which will be Britain's gravest problems presently.
