Germans have often had to pay heavily for art treasures taken from Belgian chr ches during the war and now restored to Louvain. Being well versed with their subject, knowing the country and speaking the German tongue, the Belgian Commissioners hevo succeeded in obtaining almost fall compensations for the contents of the destroyed library.

A catalogus of the library mada under the direction of the librarian, Pie Namur, in 1830. was in the Town Hall on the night that the library was burned. It has been of great usefulness in restocking the new library, the restoration of its contents having been commenced during the war. - One of the first to respond to the call was Dr. Herbert Putnam, curator of the Congressional Lá- togther 25,000 books. Mr. Cuppy, trary, Washington, who soon got curator of the John Rylands Library, Manchester, England, soon afterward promised 30,000 volumes. Books ware la col- lected by public bodies in France. Among the notable individuals to respond was the King of Spain, who ordered a collection preparar- ed. Other individuals and other countries assisted in various ways. Greece sunt marbles excavated in Crete.

The speedy restoration and re- building of the library are largely due to the efforts of Cardinal Mer- cier, Archbishop of Malines.

The Club Hall of Louvain, which was later converted into the world-famona library, was
