Rush to Rescue Phantom Ship.

Astonishment was caused to the crew of the Goodwin Sands lightship recently by the appearance of the Deal lifeboat under full canvas, with several motor launches all rushing to the sandbank to rescue ship-

sails in their haste to reach the Goodwins.

In response to the hall from the lightship as to what they were harry for, the salvage seekers from Deal replied they had observed from shore a large vessel lying stranded on the sandbank.

Laughingly the lightship men replied :-

You have all had a wild goose chase. There is nothing axbore on the Goodwing, only, as you can see, a few seals and flocks of seagulls basking in the sunshine.

It was discovered afterwards that the Chanuel oist, aided by the brillian: sun of a lovely spring morning, bad caused a wonderful mirage of a large versel to be sea from Deal shore, and it was taken for a stranded ship.

Hundreds of Sunday morning promenaders witnessed the race after the phantom ship, and the mirage effect lasted for more than an hour.
