P.E. Rowe of the steamer Takada, which arrived that day from Hongkong. He reported that on April 25th he " passed seven miles to the west- ward of the island, and an hour later it was observed that the water was full of dead fish. The surface of the water through which the vessel was steaming was covered with patches of yellow powder, and "the: smail: of sulphur was overpowering. All èx- posed white paint on the Takada became discoloured, the experi. eace lasting for more than no bour.
