CHINA'S OPIUM TRAFFIC.--

London, April IS. Chao Hsin-chu in a letter to the Times, says he wired to Peking .egarding the report that Sir Franels Agten had suggested that China should consider legalising that domestic growth and traffic in epjum, and he received a reply showing that the proposal had never been formally placed before the Chinese Government.

Chao Hsin-chu asserts that various, Chambers of Commerce in China have jointly taken steps to insist on immediate action in the direction of disbandment of troops, which will be a direct advance towards the suppression of poppy cultivation. He adds that arrange ments are being made to inititiate another campaign on the same lines as in 1917 against a sporadic opium revival.

LABOUR CONFERENCE UNSUCCESSFUL.

A five and a half hours' conference between mediators, repre- senting the farmers and farm workers proved abortive. The employers" offer was unacceptable to the Building "Trade Union Federation. which hitherto has argued that the employers' terms violate the existing agreement.
