Berlin, April 7. The Lokal Anzeiger reports the arrival at Hamburg of the first con- signment of 12,000 tons of American coal, aboard Norwegian steamers.

London, April 7. During the past two months the Russian Soviet authorities have despatched 8,000 tons of wheat to the Ruhr for the population's use.

BRITAIN AND FRANCE.

Paris, April 7.

M. Loucheur's visit to London was the sole topic in the lobbies of the, Chamber, where many Deputies assembled despite the recess M. Louchear's "self-imposed task was generally approved, and the cordiality of the ex-Minister's reception by British Cabinet members favourably commented on. It was pointed out that the reparations plan published in London did not accord with M. Loucheur's declared views.

"

Satisfaction is expressed at the tendency in certain political quar- ters in London to work towards rapprochement of Anglo-French view- points. It is thought that sooner or later negotiations are bound to be resumed and M. Loucheur's visit has achieved its aim of helping to reunite the two countries, both of which are desirous of mending the temporary breach.

The semi-official character of M. Loucheur's visit is indicated in various quarters.

The Petit Journal says that before going to London M. Loucheur and M. Poincare examined the situation in the course of several conver- sations.

The Jatin mentions that M. Louchear brought back suggestions from Mr. Bonar Law tending to the abandonment of British neutrality. M. Loucheur in an interview said he was convinced that public opinion had changed and was mostly favourable to France, although me uncertainty existed regarding French aims. He declared that all the politicians he had met thoroughly approved of France carrying

ut her enterprise to the end.

A PEACE-MAKER IN IRELAND.

л

London, April 7.

The growing popular support in Ireland in favour of an appeal for the mediatory services of Monsignor Lazio, Papal Envoy, at pre- sent touring the Free State, is regarded as holding an unusual prospect of success. Monsignor Lazio recently interviewed most of the pro- minent people.

On the contrary Premier Cosgrave apparently does not believe there is any necessity for mediation, judging from his statement in an interview, to the effect that prisoners were coming in at the rate of two hundred weekly. He estimated the number of persons at large in the country who are hostile to the Government at not more than 2,500...

Lord Derby was received enthusiastically in North Ireland, where he is touring. He reviewed the constabulary, while towns were be flagged and addresses of welcome presented.
