CHINESE PICTURE PLAY.

The Tears of a Daughter.

in-law.”

For some two or three years past the Commercial Press, Ldi fbare engaged on a modest sexlá, in the production of moving plctares. The work, purely ia conception and Chinesa jexecution, has been more or les experimental but one sees that sufficient progress has been made to warrant belief in a future for Chinese ploture playe, says the North China Daily News. This was made apparent as a private luter- view bald recently in which the Company gave a first showing of its latest picture, named "The Tears of a Daughter-in-law,” produced in. the small studio attached to the Paoshan Road works.

The coriously literal title is very characteristic of the play. Given the same story, a Western producer would bave named it The Woman Who Wept," or Weeping Willow," or some such tille

of sentiment, but the Chinese craftsman laconically names the simple fact and proceeds to illustrate it, with strict economy of incident. It is a family story showing unhap- piness wrought by an ill-temper- ed, autocratic mother-in-law, and family details are recorded with simple fidelity and without the slightest exaggeration. An extremely caive and effective realismis achieved, and one im- agines the story should appeal im- mensely to a Chinese ndience.

And seeds to suggest that it can be done. One thing is evident from the picture, riz that Chinese actors find it difficult to work in the new medium. Before the camera they seem to have but a narrow range of expression, working with ex- traordinary economy of emotion and gesture, more perhaps national characteristic than lack of experience. But one would prefer this rather than lavish imitation of foreign models and this applies to the whole produc-

tion.

An excellent setting has been chosen for the story and the photography is very creditable. Some of the scenes would delight an audience abroad.
