THE FRENCH BUDGET.

Paris. Feb. 8.

Though the Chamber recently adopted the Budget, it did not suc- caed in balancing revenue and expenditure, and the Finance Commis sion of the Senate has now refused to examine the Budget before the Chamber has succeeded in balancing it. The sub-committee, recently appointed in this connection by the Chamber's Finance Commission, has decided to submit to bankers and financiers a scheme, whereby taxation officials will be empowered to enter banks and examine their accounts. The sub-committee will subsequently, with the Minister of Finance. investigate further methods of reducing expenditure and. creating fresh taxation resources to replace the twenty per cent. general increase of taxation which has been adopted. Thereafter an attempt will be made to draft a bill for presentation to the Chamber.
