U.S. STEEL ORDERS. The United States Corporation's undled orders on September 30th. amounted to 15,691,607 tons, compared with |5,950,105 tons at August 31st.
DEMAND FOR ALUMINIUM. The Japanese demand for al- uminium remains inactive though şit is the season of consumption. During July and August, 1,000 toas of goods were importad, and this being sufficient to meet the demand in the interior up to the end of this year, the market is deeply oppressed by the large stock of goods.
DYE MARKET.
The stagnancy of the Japanese dya market being serious, many dye merabants are closing their doors. Of the members of the Dyə Guild, 39 have resigned from the guild since March this year. This is an increase by 22 in the number of resignations as com- pared with the corresponding period of last year. The present membership of the guld stands at 196, but many of them have already given up their business. Most of the dye merchants who retired from the guild are those who started' business during the

and which bas, in the first seven months of the present year, declined on comparison with the corresponding period of last year. As the embargoes have been removed, other reasons have to be found for the continued daliness. Some time ago, Says the Muinichi, the Department of Agricultura and Commerce negotiated with the foreign Gov. ernments and was successful in getting the embargo removed. Howeven exports of Japanese brushes last year were only Y4,082,622 and the exports during the first seven months of this year were 2,622,782. JepaDOGE brush manufacturers, the Mainchi says, are strenuously engazed in propaganda for Japanese brushes on foreign markets, carrying out & strict sterilisation of goods and by other expedients, but the recovery of the export trade of goods seems to be impossible: " owing to the decrease of par chasing power of the tareigo markete, through the world-wide financial depression, to the revival of brushmaking in foreign coun- tries, and to the bizb price of Japsorse brushes because of the bigh costs of manufoetire. To the above remarks, translated from a Japanese report, might be added this, that "sterilisation propaganda" by brusbakers would bare very little effect. The reason why the Government bas been able to get the embargoes re- moved is that it bas installed a sterilisation plant for all imported bristles and goods susceptible of similar treatment.
