LABOUR HOURS ON SHIPS, The twenty-three hours ship- ping strike, entered into as a protest against the modification of the eight hour day, which terminated on the 17th. ins.. began after the publication of two decrees, the first suspending the application of the eight hour day

in the mercantile marios, and explaining that the French

Parliament passed the Eight Hour Day Bill under the belief that other countries would adopt a similar measure for their mer chant services notably Great Britain and the Scandinavian countries. One of the decrees stated that French shipping, despite legislative isolation, could have supported the addicional

costs due to the introduction of the eight hour day except for the lump in freights.
