In a letter to the Times Mr. Bonar Law ärmly supports the] Government's military action in the Near East. He declares that the danger of trouble in India through the supposed British pro-Greek sympathies would be nothing in comparison with the danger arising in consequence of what would be regarded as British impotence Morever, the had we withdrawn before the victorious Turks Turkish advance would have involved Thrace and Constantinople in horrors similar to those in Anatolia, with the virtual certainty of war throughout the Balkans. Nevertheless, we were there by the will of those Powers who won the war, including America. The British Empire ought not to show hostility or unfairness to the Turks On the contrary, the Allied proposals were certainly fair to them, and we ought not go beyond them "The prevention of massacre in Constantinople and the Balkans and the "retantion of the freedom of the Straits are world interests.. Therefore our duty is plainly in tell our French Allies that the position of Constantinopla and the Straits is an essential bart of the peace settlement, as arrangements with Germany, and if they are unable to support us there we shall have no alternative except to imitate the United States and restrict our attention to safeguarding the more immediate interests of the British Empire.”

The strictest secrecy has been maintained, but the Haras Agency's correspondent says that it appears to have been agreed to permit the Turkish administration and gendarmerie to occupy Thrace as the Greeks retire, the Allied contingents withdrawing | therefrom after one month, when the territories are to be completely restored to Turkish sovereignty. Final instructions to the Allied, High Commissioners in this sense will be drafted at the next meeting.

London, Oct. T. The next step in the Near East depends on the Paris Conference. The result of the adjourned meeting is anxiously awaited, particular- ly in view of the definite reports from Constantinople that the French General at the Mudania Conference, on instructions from Franklin Bouillon, had agreed to support the Turkish demand for the immediate occupation of Thrace. Meanwhile, Turkish cavalry have invaded the neutral zone near Ismid, opening the possibility of dangerous incidents.

The Daily Express says that it understands on high authority that the Government has definitely decided not to oppose the Turks crossing the Bosphorus to Thrace, but to hold Chanak and Gallipoli. The report is entirely unconfirmed.

Malta, Oct. 7.

That Britain is leaving nothing to chance at the Straits is shown by the continual stream of transports, warships and naval suxiliaries going thitter. Five fresh fransports are on their way to the Straits, likewise quite a fleet of oil tankers.

Constantinople, Oct. 7.

A British communique states that the Conference has been resumed. The sitting was short, owing to the late arrival of the Allied Generals at Mudania. Ismet's attitude has softened xines be received Angora's reply to the Allied Note.

London, Oct. 7. That the end of the Near East crisis is in sight is the cheerful view of an authoritative statement after the Cabinet meeting which discussed the Paris agreement.

All now depends upon Turkish acceptance of the Paris fonnala which is contingent on the Turks respecting the neutral zones. In addition to the points cabled, the Allies have agreed to withdraw their contingents, ensuring control of Thrace a month after the Greek evacuation.

Paris, Oct. 8.

A semi-official interpretation of the Inter-Allied agreement says that pending the conclusion of peace the Allles will keep their troops where they are: at present stationed, namely Constantinople, Chataidja. Gallipoli, Chauak and along the Maritza line. The neutral zone will be reduced with a view to petting a wider space between the British and the Kemslists.

The peace conference should be held on 1st November, pr ferably at Scutarlor Prinkipo. The countries formerly suggested will attend the opening stages, but when the question of placing!

London, Oct. 8. Following a further meeting of the Cabinet a communique was issued in London stating that M. Poincare and lord Curzon reached agreement that the Greek army should be invited to evacuate East- ern Thrace on the understanding that the Allies occupy the territory for a month after the evacuation in order to guarantee the safety, of the mon-Turkish populations. Berlin, Oct. 8.

It is reported from Moscow that the Soviets have decided to refuse to ratify the Urquhart-Krassin agreement in consequence of the alleged non-acknowledgment of Russia's equality in the Near East.

Paris, Oct. 7.

A definite agreement has been reached on the following basis: Thrace to be evacuated, the Greek people and army leaving im- mediately. Within one month the Turkish gendarmerie and ad- ministration will take possession of the territory. After peace is concluded the Ottoman Army will cross the Straits and will pene-1 trate into Thrace, returning to complete Turkish sovereignty.
