It might be possible for them to make a little extra money, w the it a great deal of trouble to themselves, by ac

IMPROVED WIRELESS
ARRANGEMENTS.
The following is a translation of an anaouncement which ep- pears in a circular issued by the Bureau International de L'Union Berna. "In & Telegraphique. letter dated July 11. the British Post Office announce that they bave recently had under considers- tion the question of effecting some improvement in the methods of employing wireless telegraphy in the case of distress calls at sea. As is already known, many staall abips fitted with wireless sp- paratus carry only one practical operator, whose period of duty is eight hours per day. Doring the remaining hours of the day hie place is taken by substitut [[watchers who, having little ex
parience in receiving wireless signala, are incapable of distín- guishing promptly the distres signal when various stations 3*2 sending" at the same time of during atmospheric disturbance. Even experienced operators Tu the risk of failing to distinguish the signal of distress during periods of special congestion. [ view of these facts, the British authorities propose to order that an operator on board a Britian ship in distress shall send out the first signal 9.0.S.* for a period of one minute at a speed of approxi mately ave words per minute, and that each repetition shall be made at the same speed. Pending the discussion in its entirety of the question of the distress signal at the coming international cor ference, the British Post Office considers that it would bə adván-" tageous if a similar order were made by all the Administration. adhering to the Wireless Tele- graphy Convention of 1912, and requests this Bureau to bring the proposal to the notice of the various Administration with " View to its adoption by all the contracting Governments.
