COD-
LEID UP IN BRITISH PORTS. The British and foreign ge laid up at the 36 principa ports of the United Kingdom smals 1st 1922, conlted of about 500 vessels of over 180,000 tons. gross. This represents a siderable incresse оп three months ago, when there wore kid up at thesa ports 481 vessels of about 1,375,000 gross tons. In- British vessels of 1.000 net t cluded in the July total are 324 and upward, or roughly 114 million gross tons of ocean-going tonnage, forming about 91⁄2 per cent of the vessels of this size on the United Kingdom register on Jane 1-t. 1922. These totals omit British vessels laid up abroad and vessels laid up at the smaller ports of the United Kingdom. I is significant that the increase in the amount of the laid up ton nage, as compared with three months ago, has coincided with a further fall in the index number of shipping freight, which was 33.25 for March, 1922, and 29.83 for June, 1922, as compared with an average of 100 for 1920 and a maximum of 141 for March 1920. TANGTSE HIVER SURVEY,
A survey of the Yangtse River is shortly to be undertaken, pre- paratory to its improvement. Mr. George G. Stroche, hydralic engineer to the Philippines gov. ernment and formerly of the United States Reclamation Sar- vice, has been engaged by the Technical Committee of the Yangte River Commissien'in the capacity of Chief Survey Engineer, and he will be assisted by various members of the Committee. As office is to be established· in Shanghai xo a base of onerations. After suficient data has been collected, Mr. F. Palmer, of the Port of London Authority, who has had previous experience in China, will be retained to advisa the Committee on improvement schemes China Bureau of Econ Lomic Information.
