COMMERCIAL NEWS.

U. S. GRAIN. -..

The early grain movement of Pacifio Northeast America has so far this season been to the Far East inataad of Earope Last year Japanes bought between |200,000 and 390,000 tons of grain from the farmers of the Pacific Norsboast, and this year thair. purobases will far exceed that Jamount This condition is prob ably largely due to the grain famine of Manchuris. “Japan is buying steadily of wheat out of this gateway. Common wheat tonnage is firmed at $4.00, but steamshipcompanios say no space will be booked for late September shipment at that figure as the tendency is towards $500,

TRADE OF CHINKING.' The Maritime Customs report for the quarter Oct-Dec. 1921 statesThough conditions have been far from favourable, it is satisfactory to report that the total net value of the trade of the port only shows a decrease of about a million teels, and the revenue of a little ander 20,000 taols. As nothing has been done towardsdealing with the mudbank called the Chengjenchow Spis, to which reference has been made in previous reports for several years past, and which has been gradually enveloping the business section of this part. conditions bave naturally become consider- ably worse during the year under review. There are now no hulks connected with the British Con. cession bund. and the regular river steamers trading with the port are seriously inconvenienced. both as regards passengers and

cargo. The entrance to

the southern section of the Grand Canal is practically closed to traffic. except for very small boats in the high-water season, and no attempt is made to keep the mouth of the anal open. The silting up of the harbour bas caused great dificulties to the British Municipal Council in regard to the water supply, and piping 1 500 yards long bad to be Haid to deep water on the north side of the spit, but even this may have to be extended in future. Business generally' showE decrease as compared with 19.0. Idue mainly to foods, which inter- fered greatly with the movement of cargo to and from inland places. Tu-fei (brigands? were Very troublesome during the year, especially in the district north of Tsingkingpu, Travelling wES dangerous and supplies in transit ware considerably delayed on account of these pests. Officials appear to be unable to deal with them, and it seems probable that the situation will become wome ather thao better. Stock in transit was also delayed through floods, as the current was too strong to allow jacks to proceed; and as the water was for a time over the backs of the canal, steam traffic was suspended for two months. The Grand Canal Cos servancy, Board has closed 30 li of the canal, between Kasya and Mapaowan.fordredging purposes, thereby seriously hampering busi- ness. The long-distance tele- phones which were installed towards the end of 1920 are work.. ing fairly well, but there is con- siderable room for improvement.
