REVISED AMERICAN TARIFF BILL

Washington, Aug. 21.

The revised draft of the Tarif Bill passed the State by 48 votes to 25. It will be sent to a conference of both Houses. The Bill. as it now stands, is almost a complete revision of the Bill The amend- which emerged from the House of Representatives. ments number over 2.000, of which the great majority represent A substantial increase over the rates passed by the House, notably, in the case of basic commodities such as wool, cotton, sugar, steel and chemicals. The Government experts' calculations show the fol lowing average ad valorem rates, vit, cotton manufactures 54%; silk manufactures 50% wool manufactures 75%: glassware 44%; refined Pugar 63.5 per centum. There represent staggering increases over the Underwood Tariff and it is computed that the duties if ever they fails operate, will mean an additional cost to American con- sumers of about $3,000,000,000; bat it is more than doubtful whether Bill will reach the President for signature before the November elections. Many Republicans privately hope that the Bill will quietly die in Conference. In any case, if the Conference discus- sion is protracted beyond October 1st, it is safe to predict that this will happen.
