A CHINESE BRAWL.

Londen, July 19.

An Amsterdam telegram gives details of sharp fighting by Chinese firemen employed by the Nederland Steamship Company. Two were killed and several wounded. The police intervened and, assisted by a large number of bystanders, arrested twenty-four of them. The police afterwards searched the Chinese Club "Three Fingers."

GERMAN POLITICAL SITUATION.

Berlin, July 19.

The best recent sign of improvement in the political situation is Herr Ebert's request to the Government to fix a date for the Pre- sidential election which it was always understood would be held when conditions were sufficiently stable. The Government, how- ever, has decided not to hold an election before the end of the year.
