JAPANESE PURCHASE OF RICE":

The imports of almost all the foreign rice which were "GOD- Įtracted for by Japan are now -- completed. Purchases at faraign rice made by the Government- brought about a very promising" tone on the market and the Kobe foreign rice market was.' BA- "imated to sqms' extant. Da June 1st. first quality Saigon rice was Iquoted at Y6.80, superior quality of Rangoon rice at Y6.83, Siam rice at Y8.20 or Y8.30. Abous four- teen hundred koku of rice was |hought. According to telegrams from abroad Rangoon rico was quoted at Y7,80 Lab Kobe, Saigon rice 7.80, and Siam rice Ya50. As compared with the prasious telegram, Rangoon rice and Siam rice showed a decline of 5 sen.

PHILIPPINES AND COAST WISE LAW

At the general meeting of active and associate, members of the American Chamber of Com- morce, Manila, the directors were counselled to pass a resolution to

demand the application of the coastwise shipping laws to the Philippines immediately," Pres- ident Cottarman bringing the question up again because of recommendations for postpoza- ment having been made by General Frank McIntyra, chief of the Bureau of Insular Affairs. The action reiterates what the Chamber has always hald, that the coastwise regulations should be applied to the Philippines.

In order to stimulate trade for Germany it has been disseminating in its columns venomous anti-British |•|propaganda. It has been specially active in Egypt. I learn, alates the Times Berlin correspondent, that the matter was brought to the attention of the German Foreign Office and that the pro- prietors of the trade journal have been requested to discontinue the attacks on Great Britain as being opposed to German political and economic interests.
