that during the coming year they would see a large accession of members to the Corps, coupled with a very high standard of efficiency which, be was sure, they must all feel was desirable at the present time in the Colony, The actual work which they were called upon to do was very small, but there were now so many men in the Colony thoroughly trained who bad had actual experience in the hardest possible school that he thought the least they could do was to join the Curps and be prepared to do their bit when occasion demanded. "I may say arrangements have been made," His Excellency con- tinued, "whereby men will really be drafted into the Corps accord- ing to their fitness; and members of the Corps will probably be asked to do other things at par- ticular times so that the Corps, although it will nominally have a very large number in it. will con sist to a large extent of men who are trained to perform other duties and in emergencies will be called upon to do those duties and per- haps not the actual work of a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps. I would like them not to wait to be enrolled in the Corps ander a scheme which it is pro- posed to bring into force, but to come forward and send in

their names and let them appear on the roll, so that when the scheme is being organised we may find they are already in the Corps and have not waited to be drafted into it. (Applause). I need say no more on that subject. I am šure recent events in the Colony have shown everyone of us that we are in"a position here to make it essential that every man who can do any thing will do that with all his |might." (Applause).

This hint that Mr. Ronar Law might be compelled to lead the Opposition against the Government is regarded as introducing a new factor into the situation.
