The raw silk market was pro- sperous throughout the month. the total quantity of silk trans- acted during April amounting to 2,000,000 kia. From the 18th. ultimo the number of transactions' have decreased through the de- cline of the stock, states the Japan Chronicle. Affected by the prosperity of the home market, is was reported that there were many new transactions in the New York market. Such being the tone of the market, it has maintained a strong tendency in spite of the confusion on the sbare market. In the Yokohama silk market many bulls who bad- been waiting for fall in prices through the financial depression, suddenly began purchases on the 27th. April, and on the 29th, the quotations of all classes rose by Y20, superfine being quoted at Y1,790, Hagaita goality Y1,770. Yajima quality Y1,740, Hachioji quality Y1,730, Bushu quality Y1.730 and Shinsbu-Busbu quality Y1,690. At these quot ations Mitsu-Bussan bought 160,000 kin: the Nippon raw conton company, Suzuki Shoten, A No. 90 and. No. 94 each par- chased 31 030 kin, and many other foreign firms made parobases all amounting to 4°0000 ki

JAPANESE SUGAR MARKET. In the sugar market there were continual sales at a sacrificè through the unfavourable state of the money market, states the Japan Chronicle. This tone af- fected all other quotations, raw sugar being quoted at Y12.80 for April-May delivery, Y13.20 for May-June delivery, Y13.35 for June-Julydelivery, Y17,40 forspo delivery all falling by 30 sen or 40 sab. Reined sugar affected by the weak tone of raw sugar'de clined to Y23.40. According to a telegram received in Daska, the Java marketdeveloped a weaken- ing tendency, white crystallised May delivery ex warehouse being quoted at 134 guilders, Jure delivers 15 guilders, Joly delivery 11 guilders, and August-September delivery 11 guilders. As for Coba sugar, the New York marker, which had refrained from purchases for some time, began making big purchases in connection with the question of the import tariff, and quots- tions were brought up by 12 cents, fo.b. New York MOT delivery standing at $9.50. The Osaka market, however, develop- ed a contrary tendency on the 28th. ultimo, showing a fall with a range of from 15 to 20 sep as compared

wi b the previous quotations. The sugar market at the month-end was destiture of any favourabla. factors. ad rather festufeles, raw sugar being quoted at Y13 for April- May delivery, Y13.27, May-Juze delivery, Y13 55 for June-July delivery. Refined sugar stands a! Y23.80.
