JAPANESE APPRECIATION OF.

THINGS SCOTTISH, According to a mail despatch from Edinburgh, the mission of Japanese business men who re- cently made a tour around the world were greatly impressed `by their visit to Glasgow and Edin- burgh, where they visited the great industrial works which are focated in the Scottish cities. Various engineering works and the Clyde shipbuilding plants. were visited. Ur. Takuma Dan, a leading member of the misajan. said they were glad to be in the industrial and commercial capital of Scotland, where the ships were built. He believed he was i right in saying that the balk of the Japanese import and export trade and by fær the largest number of pas sengers to and from Japan were: carried in Clyde-built ships. Tha Japanese fully appreciated the belp they had got from the Clyde and indeed from the whole of Scotland. If any representa tive of that city over visited Japan they would see that the brand of Glasgow

appeared on many parts of their abips and factories.

BRITTLE DISEASE IS ALLOY STEELS

& Co, Ltd., have produced a Messrs. Armstrong. Whitworth

per brittle disease in alloy steels. steel which overcomes the tel- This disease, said Mr. Ashdown. in a paper recently, was a prob- lem which had for the past 15 years been receiving the most serious attention of metallurgists the world over. During the great war. the greatest dificulty mat with by the Air Board was this disesse in the alloy steels em- ployed in the manufacture of crankshafts. This was the cause of the scapping of a tremendous amount of valuable material, und, incidentally, of serious delay in the manufacture of seroplane engines. The new "Vibrac" steel overshadowed any of the modern alloy steels in all its general, mechanical and physical- properties. The general alloy steel were inconsistent, and often, even under the most care- ful treatment, unreliable on their impact properties. "VibracTM steel had already been produced in great quantities, and under works conditions and under ́any normal treatment it was impas- sible to make it temper brittle. Tais new steel now placed the firm in an ideal position for the manufacture of all highly-sizess- ed parts ia machinery, such as were required by zeroplanes, automobiles, railways, etc.
