The

ed a suspension of further work. proposed extension was estimated to cost about $6,745,000 but according to present plans, a temporary type of construction will be used, including light rails and make shift bridges. The station and other necessary build- ings will be little more than fiski shelters. With the present dras- tic economy, there is still waedad about $1,255,000 for materials and labour. If the laying of the track can bė started this montb, traffic to Paotowchen may be opened ia October This will extend the total length of the line to approximately five bundred miles. The road is of especial interest to the Chines Railway Department, as it is the only like to be built entirely by Chinese engineers. It is hoped to build another extension north to Urga ister when funds may be obtained more easily. This ex tension is of great importance from & military and politica (point of view as it will contribute enormously to the development of Mongolis as a port of China) The branching off point is about one hundred miles west of Kalgan on the way to Suiyuan. It has Iso been hoped to extend the irga branch still further for connection with the Trans Siberian railroad.
