THE ARMY ESTIMATES,

Sir Henry Wilson's First Speech in Parliament.

Sir Heury Wilson, until recent- ly the Chief of the General Staff, wade a remarkable maiden speech In the House of Commons last wantb.

He has a rich baritone voice, speaks in short sentences, and has a naturally logical mind. His conclusion was that if the military economies proposed by. the Government went through, we should have an army not large to prevent war or to win war, but large enough to go to war and lose it.

Agents.

1

His argument may be stated vers' briety.

Our peace Army was never meant to fight Germany, and therefore the argument that now the German menace was reduced we could afford to disarm was quite beside the point.

Our military responsibilities had vastly increased since 1913. Then Egypt. Indis and Ireland (this last country is always uppermost in Sir H. Wilson's mind) were in a state of pro- found peace; now they are s- settled.

In addition we had new respon sibilities on the Rhine, Palestine and in Mesopotamia.
