-THE GENOA CONFERENCE.
Genoa, April 26, A statement generally regarded as a reply to M. Poincare's speech made by Sir Edward Grigg on behalf of Mr. Lloyd George says that, if peace is not mada with Rusia or if the policy of leaving Gartmany and Russia out of sccount is followed, the in- evitable result will be a fierce Russo-German friendship directed against the whole of West Europe, Britain will have nothing to do with such a policy. "We are not afraid of a Russo-German menace, but we are determined to do our utmost to prevent Europe again becoming a shambles. The Russians are making a settlement most difficult, but I believe negotiations will succeed."
Paris, April 26,
According to a message from Gepoa, M. Chicherine has written to M. Skirment, the Polish Foreign Minister, demanding that he abstain from the sittings of the commission dealing with Russian affairs because, if supported, the Allies' protest against the Russo- German Treaty threatens the possibility of cancelling the Russo- Polish Treaty.

GERMANY'S DEFAULT.
Paris, April 26.
The possibility of French occupation of the Ruhr is indicated in a semi-official statement dealing with measures involving the separate action which France might take in the event of Germany's failure to carry out her cbligations. The statement says that agree- ment by the Allies on this matter, though desirable and keenly desired by the French Government, is not indispensable if the Reparation Commission, having given notice of Germany's default' should indicate that the moment for action has arrived. It points cut that Germany's period of grace expires on 31st May, where- after, if the Reparation Commission is not satisfied, it will be able to propose to the French Government measures appropriate in the circumstances.
Later.
Regarding the occupation of the Ruhr, what is not mentioned in the semi-official statement cabled earlier, in which the general" argument is stated, is that is:lated French action is in accordance with the Treaty of Versailles. The Petit Parisien to-day declares that M. Poincare does not intend France to act alone' because he believes the good sense of the Allies, particularly Britain, will pre- vent the necessity of France enforcing her strict rights and con- cludes that instead of recriminating one another the Anglo-French allies should think more of widering the alliance than making new concessions to Russia and Germany.
