NEW GLES MOTORSHIP, There are many interesting

motorship Glengarry. which is dus at Shangbai on May 2 on her maiden voyage, says Shipping and Engineering. It is an indication of the pre-eminence which British shipbuilders have already attain- ed in the construction of oil. engined vessels, that whereas only one motorship of more than 12,000 toas deadweight has been built abroad, standard ships of 14,000 tons deadweight are being turned out regularly in Grest Britain. The Glengarry is the third vessel of this size to be pat in commission this year, and is the third motor craft of the same type built to the order of the Glen Line for trade between Londoa And the Far East. The Glen- garry practically in a sister vessel to the Glenogle and the Glenapp... The length is 50%-ft. the beam 62-ft. and the normal speed at sen about 1244 knots. The daily fuel consumption at this speed is in the neighbourhood of 20-21 tons, a result which is considered

BANGKOK LINE-Weekly service to and from B'kok via S'tɔw.

Glasgow, the hall having been built at the Govan yard of the For Freight or Passage apply to

same firm. The main feature in which these motors differ from those of smaller power is that each engine drives two mit-injec- tion compressors off the end of the crankshaft instead of one which is normally fitted. This design is employed partly as a safeguard and partly as a matter of con- venience in construction. One of the two compressors is capable of * supplying sufficient air to enable the engine to run at about three-quarter load in the event of any trouble being experienced with the other compressor. The development of the motor ship has caused almost plete s revolution in engine- room auxiliaries as main propell ing machinery. This is wall instanced in the case of the Glengarry. Electric power, which is used throughout the vessel to the almost entire exclusion of steam, is supplied from no fewer than four Diesel-driven generators 100 kw. It might be thought that it would be more economical from the standpoint of initial cost to have two or three sets of larger size. One reason for adopting four is that it enables standardization to be carried out on a large scala used on smaller ships where only three sets are needed. In the second place, one plant can supply sufficient power for operating all the auxiliaries when the ship is at sea, while three will give the necessary electricity for running the cargo winches
