BRITISH SHIP OFFICER'S DEATH The death occurred on April 5 says the General China Post, of Mr. W. Sinclair, third officer of str. Tuckwo, who tell ill barely 48 hours previously with a severe form of pneumonia. Mr. Sinclair, who was 49 years of age and a native of Shetland, leaves a widow in Shangbai. The funeral took place at five o'clock the same day at the International Cemetery. Hankow, the Rev. J. Wallace Wilson conducting the service. Mr. Sinclair spent most of bir years at Newchwang, where he was held in great respect.

N.Y.K. WAGE REDUCTIONS.

OPPOSED-PISTON TYPE OF DIESEL ENGINE.

Two larke crankshafts of the built-up type are being construct- ed by Armstrong, Whitworths for opposed-piston type Diesel marine engines building at Doxford's Sunderland plant. Each will weigh 50 tons and will have 12 throws. The shaft is built up of four sets of cranks, each of three throws. for the opposed-piston working cylinder, and one-centre crank for the scavenge pumps. All are connected up by fanged couplingshafts. The total length of each complete shaft is 42-fr. 744-in. and a weight of 50 tons. The main journals are 16.93-in. in iameter and the crank-pins are 18.11. in diameter. The main crank throw is 12.235-in

PANAMA CAN L TRADE GROWTH, Figures of traffic through the Panama Canal during Deceraber, 1921, according to the latest issue of the Panama Canal Racord, show that in the coastwise traffic 20 ships of 104,152 net tons sod carrying : 91,067 tons of cargo passed from the Atlantic to the, Pacific and 23 of 116,482 tons and carrying 105,134 tons of cargo passed the opposite way. These figures showed little variation from the months immediatly preceding, but were 10 to 20 per cent larger than those for the early months of the year. The largest cargoes on the westward trip were crude and refined all.. Firon and steel, coal and coke, r&W' cotton, and machinery and other manufactured goods. On the eastward run nitrate, whest, lam- iber, sugar and oil were mainly carried.
