Captain Robert Dollar has pur- chased four big steel freight steamers from the United States Shipping Board. This sale rec- ords the first active movement a.m. U. S. All four teamers were built at Shanghai, the con- tracts for their building having been placed by the Emergency Fleet Corporation during the world war. No purchase price is given in the announcement, but recently Captain Robert Dollar stated that $32 was a fair price per deadweight ton for steel steam freighters, and steam- ship officials here Are in- clined to form this figure 19 a basis. These vessels have a dead- weight tonnage of 10,290. It is proposed to operate the vessels in various trades. It is expected that the Cathay will join the Dollar Round the World Service and the other three will par- ticipate in Pacific trades to the Orient and Australia. It is stated by Dollar line officials that tha: ships may be renamed, but that they will continue under Ameri- cua registry.
