Experiments have been begua with a view to stopping and starting the traffic of practically the whole of Manhattan Island, the heart of New York City. by powerful red, green, and yel- low signal lights placed through- out the city and operated from s single switch. Fantastic as this ides seems, it is but a develop- ment of the system already in successful operation on Fifth Avenue. On that famous

thoroughfare of de luxe shop, art galleries, and millionaire's palaces, traffic towers have been standing for two years, signalling the movement of the up and downtown traffic by yellow lights, a change in the direction of the traffic by red light, and the movement of the cross-towa traffic by green lights.

Installation of the new system has already begun and will pro- ceed rapidly during the next two or three months it is announced. When it is fully installed it will mean that a trafic dictator seated in the centre of the city will press a button causing scores of red lights to lash and halting tens of thousands of vehicles at once on the most crowded streets of Manhattan, while allowing tens of thousands of other vehicles and hundreds of thou- sands of pedestrians to proceed.
