next came the coastwise lines. As ocean services are indefinite in business results and are now acutely depressed, the N.V.K. is said to have decided to con- centrate its energies upon the coastwise and Dear-sea lines,

And offering only the ocean services for amalgama- tion. Previously. when the combination, of the five com panies was advocated, hindrances were found, and now the com- panies find themselves all in low water, with no signs of the pro- posal being realised readily. Set- ting aside the N.V.K, and the O.S.K. is a burning question to relieve the other three companies. who are engaging in ocean trade. no alternative being left open but either to have the Government subsidize them, or to get the other companies to absorb them, Ás z matter of fact, however, little can be expected in the way of Govern- ment subaidies. Moreover, the N.Y.K. has so far declared itself opposed to the proposal, whilst the O.SK. bas held its tongue. Now that the opportunity is aris- ing for the NY.K. ocean service to combine with the YY.K. Kokusai and Kawasak, the Asahi thinks that the O.S.K. will be anable to ignore it.

Thereapps, in the event of the regulations being dispensed with, the conclusion is arrived at that the greater part of the freights for export will be lost by the shipping Except for the ad- vantage of giving somewhat quicker dispatch, the Korean line. all have nothing to offer by way of attracting business. Most of the freights for export transport- ed by the Korean line are cotton yarn and sloth, which stood at 18,000 tons in 1919 and at 10,000 tons in 1920. Lo the case of the regulations (for.
