In opening the proceedings,} the Coroner said that the enquiry was called to investigate the cir cumstances of the death of a Chinese woman who lived at No. SA. Tung Street on the 17th of last month when it was raided by certain revenue officers, with the Chief Ravenue Officer in charge, in search for epium, which was supposed to be con- cealed there. A number of persons ware found од the floor and in tbe course of the search ODO of the Chinese revenue officers beard a disturbance from the street, and be ran out on to the verandah and saw a Chinese woman lying! in the street. She was afterwards identified as being the wife of one of the persons living on the floor. It appeared likely that she got frightened and tried to get from her verandah into the adjoining one and, in so doing, it was possible that she missed her bold and fell in the street. The en- quiry was held to determine the cause of her death.. Bearing important relation to the evidence was the fact that on the previons day the same house! was raided by the Police in con- nection with a search for stolen property. No evidence from the persons living on the floor was available as they had since dis- appeared from the place, and the jury would have to depend on the evidence of the police sad re- venue officers and on signed statements made at the time by the absent persons.
