COMMERCIAL NEWS. FOREIGN HOLD ON BRITISH
IRON MARKETS, The-production of pig-iron in“ Great Britain during November amounted to $71,800 tons, and that of steel to 442,800 tons, compared with 935,500 and 406,400 tons respectively during October. Though a amail in orease is thus shown over the previous month, these figures still 60 and 50 per cent. under the autuma returns of 1920. Commenting on the pres- ent state of the industry, as dis- closed by these figures, Mr. W. T. Layton, director of the National Federation of Iron and Steel Manufacturers in the course of an interview, said "The fact that pig-iron cannot be economic- ally produced at present prices has turned this country from be- ing an exporter of pig-iron to- being an importer. Before the war we imported on the average only 18,000 tons of pig-iron a month, and exported about 100,- 000 tons. Imports and exports of pig-iron in 1913 and in each of the last three months were as follow m Imports. Exports.

"In October 33,000 tons of Continental pig-iron entered Scottish ports, much of which, but for the high railway rates would have been produced on the North East Coast. For eveTY, ton of Cleveland pig-iron pro- daced 516 tons of material (ore. Coal, limestone, &c.) have to be assembled, and the railway com. panies are this losing a vast volume of traffic owing to the dapre sed condition of the British rou and steel industry-s de- pression which they themselves could do mach to remove. bigh railway rates are also re- ducing railway traffic in another was, for pig-iron manufacturers AE using cres of a bigber metallic content requiring less fuel and limestone in the blast farnares. For instar ce, în Sep- tember, eleven fims normally us- icg home ores assembled for each ton of pig-iron produced 23 cats. of material, whereas in Septem- ber. 1920, they assembled 116 cuts. This means that the leaner home ores are not being car- ried, but smaller quantities of B higher metallic content are being used, so that even such piz-iron as is being produced is affording less traffic per tan than escal to the railway companies.
"SPECS" FOR THE BOY EMPEROR.
The Shumpen states that friction bas arisen in the Ching(Mancha) housebold in Peking as a result Edward of a pair of spectacles having been made for the ex-Emperor, Hsuan Tung. Fpecialists state that unless the spectacles are used, the ex-Emperor will be blind in five years. The Empress Dowager, who is leading the opposition, says that the wearing of rectacles by the Emperor is contrary to all Imperial practices and will mean the breaking of all previous codes and establishing a precedent.
