COMMERCIA”, NEWS. GERMANY'S INDUSTRIAL
ACTIVITY.
The nativity, which has been characterising German Industry bas caused something very much like consternation amongst other manufacturing countries. These particularly fear loss of business and goodwill in Far Eastern | territary, and in portions of this territory, more particularly per- haps in the Dutch East Indies, German enterprise has indeed, been especially apparent. Never- theless, we believe that those who` regard such activity as a positive menace, do not rightly' estimate oonditions, and base their fears on erroneous conclusions. The -vagaries af exchange hava vastly. export stimulated Germany's trade. None will question that suoba factor urgently calls for amandment. With almost equal' unanimity it will be granted that ach influences are but temporary. Considered by themselves, Ger many's struggles to develop her export trade, do not constitute a menace. They indicate rather a return to more normal-conditions of Germany and of Europe. Very clearly this means for the time being increased competition to Great Britain and to America. But as the recovery proceeds in Europe recovery which Gar- many's industrial activity does so much to aid-the prices of her products, which have been al- armingly low, will rise, and we shall be able to see in its true perspective the reduction in Ger- man industrial power which has been brought about by the war. Certain economic factors have assisted German export trade; other and more dominant factors are already beginning to impose restrictions, as instance the not- ification by the German foreign trade bateau for metallurgical
& licenca products that DOW required for the export of goods coming within ita jaris- diction. It is alleged on good consumers ia authority that
is
Germany are not being supplied with iron and steel in sufficient quantities or at reasonable prices. A feature in the home market is the growing scarcity of material, abore all pig-iron, and export shipments are to be reduced to a minimum pending'an improve- ment in bome supplies. It is true that in the engineering in- dustry in Germany all depart- ments report satisfactory em- ployment. But can this legitimate- 15 be termed a mena.e when Europe's great evil to-day is ander-production. The menace, if menace there be, consists in the maladjustment elsewhere. As mentioned, we believe the fears entertained regarding Ger- many's industry prowess to be largely nofounded. Such tears may lead, however, to greater enterprise on the part of British producers, and thus out of harts good may accrue. In all respects Great Britain is, under normal conditions, infinitely better placed for securing her fair share of Far Eastern trade than before the war. Nevertheless it is well she should over rather than under- estimate competition from other countris where activity in in- dustry is so strongly mirked.- Eastern Engineering.
