FLOATING SAFEZ,

Some Dutch Indian mail steamers have been equipped with flouting safes, large enough to contain all the ship's valuables and registered mail. They look something like a cross between a floating baoy and a submarine and are equipped to ring bells, shoot off skyrockets at intervals, flash lights and blow horns when they are cast adrift. The safe is the invention of a Dutchman and is said to be absolutely unsink- able. If cast overboard before its ship goes dawn it would float about the sea, attracting attention by the noises emitted from it until Fits clockwork machinery HKD down, which would not be for more than a month!

For correct alignment it is emphasized that all the gears should be meshed to the mark ings on the teeth, because they will then be in the same relative position as they were when originally aligned ia tbe: erecting shops. If cleanliness is observed in fitting and the lubri- [cating system is maintained the gears should have little wear. Each beating is provided with a visoal indicator which enables the attendant to see that the oil circulation is being maintained and there is an arrangement whereby a thermometer may ba inserted to ascertain the tainpers- ture of the oil. It is not advisable to run a bearing above 150 deg.. and if it reaches that temperature it should be cleaned out High temperatures in modern gears, it is declared, are attributable solely to grit in the oth The gears must receive a copious-supply of oil which is fed to them through prayers at a pressuia of between 7-ib. and 10-in., per square inch. As an extra, and not as part of the standard equipment, indica- tors are fitted showing by the rotation of

The success of gearing is said to depend largely on the condition of the oil, which must be kept clear and up to its standard: The oil recommended has a specific gravity of 0.900, a flashpoint of 425 deg. F., and a viscosity of 467 Redwood at 100 deg F 284 at 120 dag: 165 at 140 dəg; and 79 #2 180 deg/
