DEATH OF THE POPE

Rome, Jan. 21. The sudden and unexpected news of the Pope's relapse caused a tremendous sensation among all classes. A feeling of hopefulness came during the day owing to the small proportion of fatalities in the present influenza epidemie in Rome even where pneumonia super vened, but this hope was dispelled by a subsequent grave bulletin. At 9.30 in the evening the Pope's voice became hoarse and feeble. The lucidity of his mind was unimpaired and His Holiness fully realised his condition and personally handed his will to Cardinal Gasparri.

There is an unexplicable absence of conñrmation of the Pope's death, news of which was received in several sources, including Cardinal Burne, and published in the evening Sunday papers. CHINA'S ARMIES.

Washington, Jan. 21. The Far Eastern Committee bas postponed taking action on the American proposal to, pablish all the Chinese Treaties at the request of the Japanese who desired to refer the matter to Tokyo.

The Committee passed a resolution expressing the Powers' hope that China would speedily reduce her large military forces as this is considered necessary before financial rehabilitation of China is possible.

Some Blunt Talk?

Washington, Jan. 21.

The Far Eastern Committee has adopted Mr. Hughes" proposal to publish the commitments in Chins, after incorporating a score of amendments, one of them at the request of the Japanese. This

eliminated publication of engagements of private individuals, to which their respective Governments are not party, The Japanese argued that a Government had no authority to compel its nationals to publian details of contracts made abroad.

Under another amendment proposed by Mr. Hoot and adopted by the Committee the Powers agreed not to support any commitment or contract creating a sphere of influence in China, or any of mono- polistic character. It is reported that some earnest exchanges oc- curred at the committes. table, but no details are published.
