The January Criminal SessionS ware opened at the Supreme Court this morning before tha Puisto Judge (Mr. Justice Gompertz). There were six cases down for hearing.

Mr. Dyer Ball, who conducted | the prosecution for the Crown, stated that on the night of the 6th-7th. December the godowni of the Kwong Yuen Tai firm, at 104. Des Voeux Road, West, was broken into. The godown coolie carefully lacked the place up as usual oo the evening of the 6th.. and when he returned in the morning be found the place all disarranged and a hole in the roof caused by the removal of a num- ber of tiles. Two cases of rolled eloth had been broken open and the contents removed whilst an- other case had also been broken open but the contents leit intact. Altogether 51 rolls were stolen. The police were at once com- municated with and Inspector Appleton was put in charge of the case. How the prisoners came to be arrested was that the police, after finding; the cloth in the small night soil boar, kept watch. The two men charged with stealing the cloth came to the boat to see about its) disposal and were caught. The prosecution was alleging that the first two mec actually took part in the theft and were trying to dispose of the cloth through the co-operation of other men em- ployed on night soil boats. There was no one on board the jonk in Gin Drinkers' Bay when the bulk of the property was re covered. The third prisoner was
