Mr. Lloyd George was very cordially welcomed by M. Briand his arrival in Faris. Afterwards he lengthily conferred with M. Poincare, when all outstanding international questions were dis- cussed; but it was impossible to reach final decisions, as M. Poin care had then not completed the formation of a Cabinet.

The greatest reserve was observed regarding the interview. but evidently the Cannes Conference was the main subject of dis- cussion. Undoubtedig M. Poincare's cabinet will unanimously accept the Franco-British pact, though it is expected that it will ask for a more definite statement regarding the reciprocal obliga- tions. It is understood that M. Poincare informed Mr. Lloyd George of his desire to revert to old methods of diplomatic dis- cussions, instead of frequent meetings of the Supreme Council, with M. Poincare is of the opinion should only assemble in order to sauction decisions. Anglo-French conversations will be resumed immediately upon all current problems.
With all best wishes sad our heartiest congratulations,—I re- main, etc.

The essential services at the mines have been, withdrawn, but the mining officials have taken over the work, in which they had been most carefully instructed by the men, many of whom were most reluctant to leave work.

DEBATING SOCIETY.
The usual monthly meeting of the Taikoo Club, Debating Society
was held in the Taikoo Club Hsil. on Friday last when a lecture was given by the President of the Society, Mr. S. Boulton, on the "Origio Bad Development of Man.** Mr.. 3. McCubbio, Vice- President, presided.
The lecturer gave an interesting survey of the many sciantic theo rips advanced on bosa origin which, he said, were too speculative to be exchanged for the account contained in the Scriptures. Refer- ring to the recent discoveries of human and animal fossil retains, said to belong to a period long anterior to man of bistory, he thought there was some evidence in the Scriptures of such an age. He agreed with the observations of the-- late Herbert Spencer, os social evolution, but gave no support to Darwinism. All true development, be said, was sucial, moral, and spiritual. There was no single evidence of the line of reproduction heing broken: like must produce like physically. Man was a WOO- derfully endowed animal and, in his true development, was fulfilling the purpose of his creation...
The lecture crested quite so interest among those present; and many questions put to the speaker were replied top
The Chairman complimented Mfr. Boulton co bis, lecture and the manner in when the questions of members had been answered, the meeting being, suted the best yet held by the society. A beszty vote of thanks brought the meating to a close..
