SHANTUNG QUESTION.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 6. 1922.
Washington, Jan. 3, Yesterday's meeting of the Sino-Japanese delegates directly discussed three alternative plans for payment of the Shantung railway. It is stated the Japanese reasserted their demand for payment through a Japanese loan, which the Chinese declined, declaring they would not recede from the proposal for payment in cash in twelve years instalments. The situation rested here when the delegates adjourned with neither side willing to comment on the ultimate possibility of a satiafactory settlement. Mr. Wang stated that the Chinese formally declined to consider a Japanese loan and would expect definite acceptance or rejection of either the Chinese alternatives. Dr. Wellington Koo denied two reports, one allegedly from a Japanese source, the other from a representative of South China, to the effect that the Peking Government was ready to accept a Japanese loan proposal. Despite the lack of Chinese' optimism, the Anglo-American officials are hopeful of a successful outcome now that the deadlock has been broken.
A communique issued at the conclusion of Wednesday's discus- sion of the Shantung question' says the meeting will be resumed on University Past v. Present. Thursday when the discussions will be completed.
The woous University match. Past "Present, was played on the Fairersity ground on Monday, the Prezent wining comfortably. They tatted first, sod after losing wicket at five, had 110 up for the second and went on to make 214. The Pasts replied with 149, good total considering that they had lost even wickets for St. The Present. in their second effort.

Preparing the Pact.
While the completion of the Naval Treaty is being expedited as much as possible attempts are being made to embody in the Treaty the decisions reached så regarda China. Such a pact, if anally decided, will be signed by eight Powers and possibly also by China if she desired. The part will probably take the form of a series of revolutions and general statements spp.rting China and declaring China's territorial integrity coupled with a number of appendices defining the issues which have been cleared up by the Conference. It is as yet uncertain whether such a pact would em- brace only Chinese problems or also include the question of the Dutch possessions in the Pacine and other Far Eastern problema.
