COAL MINING IN SHANTUNG.

Mr. Chea Chih-eli of Sintai- [beien, Shantqng, has raised a BUM

of $200,000 for the working of the Sintal Coal Mine, which is focated between Lungtan and Chéali- sang. He has already applied for registration to the Provincial Industrial Commissioner, who has ¡rubmitted the application to the Ministry of Agriculture and Com- merce for official sanction. The application is under consideration. PRICE OF DYES.

The

states that transactions are being made speculatively in foreign dyestuffs. as foreign quotations are 10 to 26 per cent, lower than Japanese. though the market has abundant stocks. In Japan, atramine, concentrated, (German) is. quoted at Y700 and malachite green si Y840 to Y850 for large ärystals, at 3750 for middle crystals, and lat Y650 for small crystals, while American direct black stands at Y470 to Y480, methyline blue at $650, methyl violet at Y350, and sulphur black at Y40. All these quotations, though they show a fall 10 to 20 pareant, as compared with the recent quotations, are still five or even six times higher than the pre-war figures.

Regarding the alleged purchase by the Government of toe Toyo Ironworks now under the admin- istration of the Yawata Iron- works. the trahi now reports that the opinion is gaining ground among the Directors of the Toyo Ironworks that since the manage. meat of the whole business of ibe works has been entrated to the Government and the standing of the works is no longer significant, it is proper to dissolve it, a∙l their factories being purchased by the Government. There was tɔ be a meeting of the Board of Dir ctors on the 17th. instant in Tokyo to decide upon the propriety of dis- solving the company. A few of the companies in which the Iros- works are interested bare bad their business readjusted.

CHINESE DYE WORKS.

In view of the fact that the Chinese wearing industry, although it has made long strides in recent years. is still in its infancy in regard to the mode of dyeing and does not follow the fashion of the times, some of the influential members of the Shang- bai Spioning and Wearing Association bare in view the establishment of dyeing factories there, according to the Jiji. This plan has not yet assumed concrete shape, but the possibility of its materialising is growing, as it is backed by American cotton yarn merchants. In Osaka, the merchants interested are paying careful atte tion to the develop- ment of the scheme. Some Japanese spinning interests have already decided to create similar factories in Shangbai, but if the | initiative is taked by Chinese it will not only disappoint the Japanese who think that they can of dyeing, but affect the Japanese beat Chinese goods in the mafter industry in the Chins markets

Dr. F. A. Bainbridge, Professor [of Physiology, University of London, has died of heart failure following lung trouble, at the age of 47. He was recognised as one of the chief authorities on diseases not a little. of the lungs.
