31st January, 1922" They further decided that it was desir- able that the necesasty stopp. 5 should be taken to give effect to No. 5 of the resolutions passed by the Maritime Law Committee, which is as follows:-"That in the opinion of this association (International Law Association) iba use if the sh-pping documents known as * received for shipment,' bills of lading, and like docu- mants, has become in many cases a necessity of commerce. This association is. therefore, of opinion that the interests con- carned, should

co-operate to remove difficulties which at pre- sent attend the use of such docu- ments in the cases in which the necessity for their use is general- ly recognised."

TRADE CONDITIONS AT SOUTH RUSSIAN PORTS.

In a letter received by a firm of bankers and shipping agents, Liverpool, from their head office writer in Constantinople. the inter dia, says For your in- formation we leam from intimate friends just returned from Batonm that the Soviet authorities in that district allow importers of foreign goods every facility to trade and grant licences to them, making the importers of foreign goods and their stores immune from.. any requisition orders which may be issued by the Sorist Govern-

ment This new order will cause general trade to Batoum to revive, and we look for some movement in that direction. The conditions ia Novorossisk and other South Russian ports are rather differant, but even in those ports trade is beginning to raviva, and a steamer has this week arrived from Novorossiak with over £30,000 worth of Russian produce on board, which we are ourselves bandling and can testify to the quantities and values ex- ported. We are assured that in Batoum itself there is sufficient Turkish, English and American currency obtainable at short notice to pay for any reasonable quantity of goods which may be sent there for sale. Italian mer- chants and liners are taking fall advantage of this new state of affairs.”
