time fit for carrying out such a great scheme, though it admits the desirability of carrying out its long-cherished designs on the Calcutta line.

OIL FUEL ON SHIPS, At a meeting held of the Institute of Marine Engineers, London, Mr. A Keene,

member

of

of the Institute, submitted paper on the arrangement mscbinery necessary for the burning of oil fuel. Referring particularly to the use of oil fuel in ships, be said there was a saving in deadweight, one ton of oil pot caly occupying leam space than a ton of coal, but giv- fing the same results as 16 tons of coal. A better and quicker regulation of force fires could be effected. Fewer firemen were required, and hand manual isbour was eliminated. The steam was under perfect control, and a aud- den call for extra power and speed could be met with certainty and in a very short time, Bank- ering could be carried out with great rapidity and without any of the objectionable features con- pected with coal. The initial cost of any oil system was fairly heavy, but once installed the working costs were remarkably low. In certain cases the com version from oil to coal or vice veras might be carried out in a remarkable short time, a 1656 being on record where a ship under this arrangement complet- ed a conversion from full speed on oil in 28 minutes. Oil fet

might be burned in such a roa ner that combustion was perfect and without a sign of smoke. Difficulties had arisen in certain cases of converted ships as 19- gards the elimination of smoke, and experience was required to hit upon the correct combination of temperature and pleasure. under varying conditionsme with different oils,
