Interesting Contests At V. R. C.
The Hongkong Police Force beld 4 aquatic meeting at the Viotoris: Recreation Club's bath on Satur day. There was a fair entry for the contests, which were watched by a large nur ber of visitors.
The bumour of the afternoon was supplied by Messrs. Condon and Grimm in a Charlie Chaplin Mabel Normand stunt performed in a

A railroad strike is foreshadowed as the result of a statement by the Railroad Executives' Association that railroads cannot reduce freights without going bankrupt, and they are therefore seek- ing a further reduction of wages. The operatives .have already voted against reductions,

Five hundred general chairmen of four Trainmen's Brother-
hoods and the Switchmen's Union have been instructed to initiate progressive general strike on 30th inst. The railroads are divid- ed into four groups. The strike begins on seventeen railways on 30th October, and other groups will follow at twenty-four hour intervals.
Washington, Oct. 16.
The Railway Board Group, representing the public as the ultim- ate authority on wages, has been summoned to confer with the Inter- state Commerce Commission, which is the ultimate authority on rates apart from wages. The joint conference has appointed a sub-committee to continue the discussions next week.
