THE OLD AND THE NEW. Thirty-five years ago the first Canadian Pacific ship, the W.. Flint, a sailing vessel of 800 tona. left Yokobama for Canada. Her destination was Port Moody, which was then the terminus of the CPR. It took more than thirty days to accomplish the trip then, as compared with recent records made by the Empress of Asia and Empress of Russia of a little over eight days. The cargo of the W. B. Flint consisted almost entirely of tea, as there was no other commodity offered at that time for shipment from Japan. Today the cargoen are valuable shipments of silk... tea, toys and Oriental mer- chandise. Tounaze has also changed. The 8 tona of the W.B. Fliat have become the 22, 000 tons of the new Empress of Canada, now completing, the 19- 300 tons of the newly-acquired Tirpitz, to be re-named the Eme press of China, and the 16,850 tons of the Empress of Russi and Empress of Asia.

RAW COTTON PREIGHTS. In infringement of the custom- ary rule as to negotiations' with shipping companies on Indian cotton, the Japanese Raw Cotton Trade Association has elected as gotiating Committee of five men." Meanwhile, speculations already accumulate of the strong attitude, which will probably be taken up by the Spinning Association to wards the NY.K. According to

the the Jiji, Spinning A- sociation, on the application, ioformal or otherwise, of the Kokusai Kisen Kaisha and the Shipping Department of the Mitsui Bassan Kaisha, showed a very stalwart attitude at the recent meeting, and ine:sted apon the freight rate being. fixed at Y13 to Y14 The N.I.K seems to be resolved to compromise on point Y3 to Y4 lower than the present rate of Y22.50. The ex- pectation obtalos that there will [be very intricate negotiations

before the matter is settled.
