SMALLER SHIPS. One of the most unsatisfactory features of the shipbuilding

position, as revealed by Lloyd's Register statistics, seems to have escaped the commentators. It is the steady diminution in the number of bigger ships. In the table which gives the sizes of vessels under construction at is shown on comparison with the corresponding table for the pre- ceding quarter that the number of the bigger type of ships is decreasing. The inference is, of course that as these ships are being completed, our liner.com- panies, which are primarily con- cerned with vessels of this class, are not seeking to replace them. At present the biggest ship build. ing is under 30,000 tons, and both this and others slightly smaller are likely to disappear from the list in the near future.

beri The figuras returned of recent date show that the total of ulle vessels tied up in Jaozneno parts amounted to 32 of 132,451 tons deadweight in iron and steel vessels and 35 of 34,206 tons dead- weight in wooden vessels, which is a decrease of nine in steel or iron vessels and of 34 in woodsz vessels. Most of these released vessels, as may be seen in the foregoing figures, are wooden crafts of smaller type. It expected that so far as such larger vessels are left idle, no bright, prospect will dawn on Japanees shipping circles, but at least it is believed that the increasing release of these staller crafts is sa indication of coming activity in the shipping situation.

A TALE OF THE SEA.

A fresh explanation of the dis- appearance of a number of sailing ships off the coasts of Virginia and New Jersey in recent mealos is furnished by a special coTTER- pondeat of the Philadelphia Public Ledger, who is engaged in delving into the secrets of the smuggling trade. He asserte that the ships were engaged in liquor smuggling, and that, after unload- ing their cargoes of liquor, they were deliberately cast away be- cause they were unable to retura to port.
