during the war, and the construc- ríos of a 2,700.tous ship in Hol land equipped with two 500 b.bp. semi-Diesel engines is, therefore, step of some significante. The engines in this case are of the Bolinder type, and the designers have made a radical departure in at least one important direction. Usually with semi-Diesel engines of this size it is necessary for the balbs to be heated for, at least half an hour before they are started up. "This may be regari- jed as one of the drawbacks of the semi-Diesel design, and in ordug to overcome it the manufacturers' have now devised a means of starting from cold. Electric ologs of special design fitted in the tops of the leylinder, and these are heated by the passage of current from accumulators charged from the electrical auxiliary plant Even these large motors, it is claimed, can be started up almost immé. diately, and another advantage is * the elimination of the blow lamps, which are somewhat inconvenient and always a passible source of danger. It is noteworthy that many manufacturers of semi- Diesel machinery, are adopting some form of. electrical starting device, and this arrangeinent is employed with the Vickers Petters and Ekandis engines. There are other. Tie- portant developments pending in the design of semi-Diasel “ping, and as the cost of construction of this type of machinery is lower. than that of Diesel engines, it is possible that the two types will come into competition for of moderate tonnage.
