WO PING MURDER.

Yesterday Afternoon's Proceedings.

The Wo Pine murder trial, in which Yeung Ko is charged with oausing the death of an actor named Li Sui-fam at the To Ping theatre on August 16:b, was still proceeding yesterday afternoon when we went to press.

Mr. Jenkin, in continuing his address for iba defence, said that With regard to the evidence that the Chinese detective never once tost sight of his man, counsel referred to the bamboo fance and submitted that it must have taken some time for the detective in lovercame this obstacle and shat while he was breaking down the leave the murderer must bave been out of sight. Referring to the evidence that prisoner struggled violently when arrested, Mr Jenkin contended that anyone. 'whether guilty or innocent, would struggle under such circumstances. With regard to the long white coat, counsel said it was quite clear that the cost did not Et prisoner and it was obvious that if the Crowe bad thought that it was prisoner's cost then they would have put it on him to show that it sted him

With regard to the evi idence that prisoner had

sboer, Mr. Jenkin submitted that a man would not go into a theatre ito commit murder bate-footed, because by so doing be would be sure to attract attention. It had [been suggested that the shoes were Hlast in the prisoner's right. Then that being o. asked counsel, why were they not found? Prisoner was arrested in Gilman Street) and was hustled back to the theatre. Counsel thought it quite possible that the shoem were bet on the way back to thei theatre, br were not found: because there was a large crowdi present and everyone WAS too excited to trouble about such matters and if they were found is was quite possible, he contended. that it was thought that they be longed to somebody in the crowd.

Mr. Jenkin submitted that prisoner's luggage was such that might belong to any Chinese on a visit from Canton. It was just an ordinary traveller's belongings and the police bad failed to find any. thing iscriminating in it. Mr. Jeckia referred to the identification parades. He made do accusations, but be suggested that the parade was not the fairest possible and therefore was of no value whatever. Basluding, counsel said there was something nos cricket in the ticket issue and he would say that that pervaded the whole case.

Attorney General's Reply. The Attorney General opened bis address by registering a protest OTHERS take your photos, but against the suggestion that a man by our 30 years experience we who was not a European got less take yours in EXCELLENT justice in a serious case than a CONDITION and NATURAL European. CHINA AND THE LEAGUE.

Geneva, Sept. 12 Dr. Wellington Koo in an interview with Reuter's representative said that the boroura which had come to him from the League of Nations as President of the Council and acting Chairman at the opening and second Assembly, were really honours, bestowed upon China. He was glad that these honours had come to China because China had been playing a very great part in the League ever since it entered it." He recalled the important part taken by China's delegate in the deliberations of the first Assembly and pointed out that China was at present represented on the Council of the League on Committees dealing with military, naval and- aərial and also affairs, opium traffic, amendments to Covenant, transit and mudications. China had participated in several international anferences under the auspices of the League. A China représentative had acted as reporter to the Council of the League in regard to the administration of the Saar, the organisation of the Secretariat and finance of the League and the opium problem; while he was a member of the Committee on Upper Silesia.

Com

China's active participation in the League became her not only as a great country but because the spirit of the League was essential- by the spirit of the Chinese, who were the greatest lovers of peace. The Chinese civilisation was built up on the central idea of up- holding the supremacy of right a reason over force and might. He was glad to note the increasing interest of the Chinese presa in the League because the continued success of the league depended primarily on the support of public opinion of all countries. Sot the least two questions before the present Assembly which greatly. interested the Chinese were disarmament and the International Court of Justice. China naturally wished a rapid redactian of armaments which would promote peace and also the speedy establish- ment of a permanent tribunal of international justice inasmuch as such a court would go a long way towards preventing wars.

Dr. Wellington Koo hoped soon to report the completion of China's ratification of this court He mentioned among

matters specially interesting to China, amendments to articles twenty-one and ten of the Covenant, the election of judges of the International Court of Justice, the appointment of non-permanent members of the Council of the League and the opiam question. He hoped for a satis- factory outcome on these questions.

CONSPIRACY AT CONSTANTINOPLE DISCOVERED.

Constantinople, Sept. 9.

It is reported that the British intelligence authorities have discovered a plet, organised and subsidised from Angora and chiefy among Turkish officers, with a view to stirring up revolution in Constantinople, seizing surrendered war material, spreading dis- affection among loyal Indian troops, and assassinating the leading officers of the Allied forces. Seventeen desperadoes are said to have been brought to Constantinople specially to emmit the murders. General Harington bas submitted a list of those compromised to the Turkish authorities and demanded that they be arrested and handed over within a week to be tried by an Allied court.

CONFISCATED PROPERTIES.

Paris, Sept. 12.

Negotiations have been concluded whereby a powerful American financial syndicate is to champion the claims of the Austrian Archduke Frederick against the various Central European Govern- ments which sequestrated conscated properties. The latter is estimated to be worth forty million sterling and to consist of land. and industrial holdings including steel works and mines at Teschen. the return of which the syndicate is anxious to secure with the view. to a resumption of operations on american lines.
